A full <span class=\"mit-highlight\">3 million are in the concentration camps<\/span>, <span class=\"mit-highlight\">500,000 children are taken to orphanages<\/span>, and forced communist guests are placed in a <span class=\"mit-highlight\">1 million Uighur households<\/span> where about 5 million-plus Uighurs live.<\/p>\n<p>But those who are outside this system are still subject to extraordinary scrutiny. Their blood is drawn for DNA, their faces scanned, voices recorded, and fingerprints taken by the authorities. Children are interrogated. Neighbors become informants. Mosques are monitored. Cameras are everywhere. Security posts are <span class=\"mit-highlight\">500 yards apart<\/span> in cities. Each Uighur car must be fitted with tracking devices. Uighur Muslims must install a spyware application on their devices.<\/p>\n<p>The totalitarian determination of the Chinese Communist Party and modern technology are producing a massive abuse of human rights on an unprecedented scale.<\/p>\n<p>What we are witnessing in Eastern Turkistan (Xinjiang) is massive, concerted campaign of coerced sociocultural re-engineering. It says it has set up, jointly with the ministry\u2019s forensics center, a key ministry laboratory in artificial intelligent voice technology (\u667a\u80fd\u8bed\u97f3\u6280\u672f\u516c\u5b89\u90e8\u91cd\u70b9\u5b9e\u9a8c\u5ba4) that has \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helped solve cases<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d in Anhui, Gansu, Tibet, and Xinjiang. The company\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">states it can develop<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0artificial intelligence systems that can handle minority languages, including Tibetan and Uyghur.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iFlytek\u2019s website also claims it has developed other audio-related applications, including \u201ckeyword spotting\u201d for \u201cpublic security\u201d and \u201cnational defense\u201d purposes. The web page gives no further details of what these keywords or the security threats might be. In a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patent it filed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in August 2013, iFlytek states that it has developed a system to discover \u201crepeated audio files\u201d in the telecommunications system and on the internet that may be useful in \u201cmonitoring public opinion\u201d:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also have a partnership with Sensetime.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2018\/mit-sensetime-announce-effort-advance-artificial-intelligence-research-0228\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">http:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2018\/mit-sensetime-announce-effort-advance-artificial-intelligence-research-0228<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considered China\u2019s leading AI \u201cunicorn\u201d valued at more than $3 billion, SenseTime has developed a sophisticated proprietary deep learning platform and built applications for multiple industries. The company has applied its core computer vision technologies, including face recognition, video analysis, text recognition, and autonomous driving, across industries such as automobile, finance, mobile Internet, robotics,\u00a0security,\u00a0and smartphones.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-11-19\/this-company-is-helping-build-china-s-panopticon-it-won-t-stop-there\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-11-19\/this-company-is-helping-build-china-s-panopticon-it-won-t-stop-there<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SenseTime set up a joint venture called\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xinjiang SenseTime Leon Technology Co.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in the province last year, but the company declined to say whether its technology is at work in the network of cameras that scan many license plates and faces at checkpoints.
