The bill, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youngkim.house.gov\/2025\/09\/02\/house-passes-rep-kims-bipartisan-uyghur-policy-act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">championed by Rep. Young<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kim (CA-40), Rep. Ami Bera (CA-06), and House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Rep. Gregory Meeks (NY-05), lays out a comprehensive U.S. strategy to support Uyghurs and other Turkic people enduring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/countries\/2022-08-31\/22-08-31-final-assesment.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crimes against humanity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uyghurtribunal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Uyghur-Tribunal-Summary-Judgment-9th-Dec-21.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genocide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The legislation would:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coordinate U.S. policy by directing the Secretary of State to lead Uyghur human rights initiatives that protect Uyghurs\u2019 ethnic, religious, cultural, and linguistic identity.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support human rights defenders working to end CCP abuses against Uyghurs..<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Force the CCP to end crackdowns against Uyghurs by increasing accountability to human rights organizations and develop strategies to close detention facilities and political indoctrination camps.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protect the Uyghur diaspora by combating transnational repression and establishing reporting mechanisms for victims.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Uyghur Policy Act passed with strong bipartisan support and now moves to the Senate for consideration, where its companion bill (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/senate-bill\/1542\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S.1542<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), introduced by Senator John Curtis (R-UT) earlier this year, awaits action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imam Abdul Malik Mujahid, President of Justice For All, praised the development, \u201cThis bill is a historic step toward holding the Chinese government accountable for its atrocities against the Uyghur people. For too long, the world has watched in silence as Uyghurs endured mass detention, forced labor, and erasure of their identity. We commend the House for its leadership and urge the Senate to move quickly to make this policy law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hena Zuberi, Director of Advocacy for Justice For All stated, \u201cOur Save Uyghur Campaign has been advocating for the passage of this bill for several years and we are delighted that it has passed the House and look towards the Senate for firm resolve to end transnational repression of Uyghurs and advocates in the USA.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arslan Hidayat, Team Lead of the Save Uyghur Campaign, added, \u201cThe Uyghur Policy Act sends a clear message: the Uyghur genocide cannot be ignored.
