Contact: Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) +1 (703) 217-7266, +1 (646) 906-7722<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Uyghur Human Rights Project has released a new report analyzing the Chinese government\u2019s attempts to craft and promote a narrative responding to international criticism of its large-scale arbitrary detention of Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.uhrp.org\/pdf\/Disinformation_Propganda_and_the_Uyghur_Crisis.pdf\">\u201cThe Happiest Muslims in the World\u201d: Disinformation, Propaganda and the Uyghur Crisis<\/a>, UHRP traces the evolution of the Chinese government\u2019s narrative from secrecy and denial to whitewashing and justification.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CCP is relentless in its efforts to cover up and justify its human-rights crimes against Uyghurs,\u201d said UHRP Executive Director Omer Kanat. \u201cThe authorities claim that the world should applaud their policies in East Turkistan, but they cannot admit what they are really doing. This large-scale disinformation and propaganda campaign is the other side of the coin of genocidal repression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-rights-un\/u-n-says-it-has-credible-reports-that-china-holds-million-uighurs-in-secret-camps-idUSKBN1KV1SU\">confronted<\/a>\u00a0at the August 2018 UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination review, the Chinese government at first completely denied the existence of mass detention camps, but soon reversed course by justifying the concentration camps as an effort to educate \u201cextremists\u201d in \u201cvocational training centers.\u201d Later, the government claimed that detainees had \u201cgraduated,\u201d as it launched a vast scheme of factory\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uhrp.org\/press-release\/press-release-180-orgs-demand-apparel-brands-end-complicity-uyghur-forced-labour.html\">forced labor<\/a>\u00a0and meted out long\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/livingotherwise.com\/2019\/10\/05\/from-camps-to-prisons-xinjiangs-next-great-human-rights-catastrophe-by-gene-a-bunin\/\">prison<\/a>\u00a0sentences without trial.<\/p>\n<p>Officials claim that all criticism of China\u2019s policies are a foreign conspiracy, going so far as to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-xinjiang\/china-official-says-xinjiangs-muslims-are-happiest-in-world-idUSKCN1B50ID\">say<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthe happiest Muslims in the world live in Xinjiang.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chinese state media videos featuring\u00a0coerced statements by the family members of diaspora Uyghurs amount to a type of\u00a0\u201chostage propaganda.\u201d Residents of the Uyghur region are filmed declaring that they have not been mistreated in any way, and denouncing their overseas relatives for spreading \u201clies.\u201d These\u00a0propaganda videos add to the trauma that Uyghurs overseas are already suffering due to their relatives being disappeared into camps or given long prison sentences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoliticians and international media must not fall into the trap of recycling the CCP\u2019s brazen and cynical disinformation and propaganda,\u201d urged UHRP\u2019s Omer Kanat.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/uhrp.org\/press-release\/uhrp-report-%E2%80%9C-happiest-muslims-world%E2%80%9D-disinformation-propaganda-and-uyghur-crisis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Read the full report here.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In collaboration with UHRP, Save Uighur is helping to increase access to their reports.<\/span><\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following is taken from an Uyghur Human Rights Project press release on July 28, 2020.
